Acheron I (temporary installation), 2018, Wood, construction panel & cement, 1150 x 650 x 200 cm

Bruges Triennal, Bruges, BE (with support of Van Marcke)

With ACHERON I, an installation in the water, a connection is suggested between our present-day society and the mythological underworld. Acheron, derived from the Greek word achos, symbolizes the “river of sorrow” in mythology. This mythical river marks the passage to the underworld, where the dead make their crossing under the guidance of Charon. Acheron is also a real river in northwestern Greece that partially flows underground—this natural phenomenon may have inspired the myth.

In Bruges, the artwork materializes this transition, creating a link between life and death. The water’s surface acts as a boundary. The sculpture becomes a harbor, an entrance, a gateway between the present, the future, and the past.
